Lovebirds

Lovebirds are intelligent, sassy, and highly social parrots that can live up to 15 to 20 years. Before bringing one home, consider their long lifespan, need for daily social interaction, potentially loud vocalizations, and the fact that their highly sensitive respiratory systems require a completely bird-safe household.

Long-Term Commitment and Social Needs: Lovebirds get their name from the intense bonds they form, either with a feathered mate or their human flock.

Noise and Behavior: While smaller than macaws or cockatoos, lovebirds are far from quiet. They have a loud, high-pitched contact call that they use frequently throughout the day to communicate.

Aggression & Biting: Despite their cute name, lovebirds can be highly territorial, sassy, and nippy. They generally do not get along with other species of birds and must be housed separately.

A Bird-Proof Home Environment: Lovebirds have incredibly sensitive respiratory systems and require a careful, non-toxic environment. Fumes from non-stick cookware (Teflon) and self-cleaning ovens are highly toxic to them. You cannot burn candles, use heavy air fresheners, spray aerosols, or smoke cigarettes in the same room as a lovebird.
