Budgerigars
Before buying a budgie, ensure you can commit to a flock dynamic (they thrive best in pairs), provide a very large cage, and remove household hazards like non-stick cookware, scented candles, and aerosols, which are highly toxic to their sensitive respiratory systems.
Social Needs: Budgies are flock animals and require a companion. You should generally purchase two budgies instead of one, unless you have hours every day to dedicate to being their sole companion.
Lifespan & Commitment: With proper care, budgies can live between 5 to 15 years, representing a long-term daily commitment.
Cage Requirements: Standard cages are often too small. Your cage needs to be long enough for multiple wing-flaps, and you should be able to let them out for safe indoor free flight.
Diet & Daily Care: A healthy diet goes beyond standard seeds; they need fresh, safe, non-organic vegetables and 10 to 12 hours of uninterrupted, quiet sleep every night.
Budget & Vets: You will need to locate an avian-specific veterinarian in your area, as standard dog/cat vets usually do not treat birds. Checkup, emergency, and ongoing care can get expensive.
